about

The end of 2023 sees the return of new age guitarist-composer Jake Soffer with his fifth career release Green Songs. The EP features 5 acoustic guitar-driven pieces that simultaneously crackle with cozy domesticity and elicit themes of escape.

Jake’s music continues to conjure deep meditative moments with nature. He draws from the sounds of folk, American primitive guitar, ambient, and new age to create a unique, non-lyrical musical voice. His virtuosity serves the image as he captures a full-band’s worth of expression and dynamics with just a guitar.

Green Songs is a journey through a landscape of acoustic guitar and ambient soundscapes. The EP's opener, "Colors And Shapes," is propelled by an acoustic guitar ostinato with accompaniment from a spacious crescendo'd electric guitar that mimics a pedal steel. Unfolding slowly and stately, the track's minimal instrumentation lends credence to what Soffer describes as an ode to simplicity.

"Queen Of The Coast," the EP's leading single, features a more robust instrumentation than its preceding track: acoustic 6 and 12 string guitars, electric guitar, mandolin, electric bass, and drum programming all performed by Soffer himself. The piece's cheery disposition is inspiring, evoking endless coastlines and lush bucolic pastures as green as the EP's title.

The EP takes a melancholic detour with "Bubble Glass Windows," but returns to its warm and cozy aesthetic with "Comfy Cozy." Painting a sonic portrait of a warm hug, "Comfy Cozy" features the intricate counterpoint of three carefully composed acoustic guitar parts. The track's two-word title has five letters and four letters, a nod to the piece's 5/4 time signature.

Closing the EP is "Miles And Miles," an escapist solo guitar outing that recalls sounds of Windham Hill Records artists like William Ackerman and Michael Hedges.

Soffer's deft arranging skills shine in Green Songs as the artist continues to forge his non-lyrical voice. He has solidified himself as an impressionistic composer and a multi-talented guitarist, equally adept at complex finger picked passages and dynamic clean-toned electric guitar soundscapes.
